JOHNNY HOHENSTEIN

A native of Savannah, Georgia, I grew up in a home where paper crafts, driveway plays, and shadow puppets were the typical pastime. As an only child, entertaining myself was a challenge I adapted to pretty well; I was always finding new ways to create - whether it be attempting to dig a mote around our house, or improving (ruining) my school uniform with leftover paint.

I attended Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. My passion for event planning and leadership development pushed me into the direction of student affairs, and two years later I found myself with a Master’s in Higher Education Administration.

During graduate school, I was part of the management team for a select-service hotel in Charlotte, where hospitality and guest services was engrained in me. Being part of a team that was energized by creating a powerfully positive guest experience changed me. It was with this team that I learned that every field holds an element of hospitality and that every guest or client deserves your best.

For seven years, I worked on college campuses in student affairs. Housing, conduct, roommate mediations, student programming, and leadership trainings were my love language for quite some time. In my spare time, I found myself being drawn to digital artwork: designing posters, t-shirts, and other print items for student groups. I quickly became “the t-shirt guy” on campus. Little did I know it, but my portfolio was quickly expanding.

In 2017, I started designing and selling a few prints online on Etsy, where “Ink Well” was born. I had this revelation that graphic design and artwork has the power to make people feel good. After all, the creative process was always there for me when I needed a distraction or just to recharge my creative juices.

I’m at a point in my life where I can look back and see how everything has connected. Learning about the human psyche, emotions and stimuli, empowering others, and tapping into a virtual creative process has all lead me to realize that a well-made design has the power to make you feel good. And I’m all about that.
